Summary of request

Table 1 provides the number of suicides and the standardised mortality ratio for medical workers (such as medical practitioners, pharmacists and nurses), for deaths registered in England between 2011 and 2015.

Figures are for all persons (that is, males and females combined). Our recent report on suicide by occupation in England provides the data in Table 1 split by sex. Given the sex-specific risks for suicide, particularly among those working in medical professions, we recommend using sex-specific data to fully understand the risks reported here.
