Thank you for your enquiry.

Responding to your questions in order:

1. There is no national register of disabled people, however individuals may be recorded as disabled when they apply to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) for certain benefits or they seek relevant services from local authorities, the NHS or third sector organisations.

You should direct this question to DWP who publish relevant information about numbers of disabled people with breakdowns by type of impairment, severity of limitation, frequency of care received and other factors based mainly on the Family Resources Survey.

2. and 3. See answer to question 1.

4. We do not have up-to-date information on numbers of disabled people living in care homes or other communal establishments as our most regular surveys are based on private households. We hold figures based on the 2011 Census which can be accessed through the NOMIS online database. The DWP may be better placed to help you.

5. The DWP may have relevant information based on applications for certain benefits, or other sources and therefore may be better placed to help you.

6. See answer to 1. above.

7. We do not hold data which assesses what care disabled people receive or whether it meets their needs. The DWP may have relevant information.

8. and 9. See answer to 1. above.

10. A report covering the housing arrangements of disabled people is scheduled to be published on the ONS website on 2 December. Although this will not answer all of your questions, you can request additional breakdowns by contacting the team responsible at the email life.course@ons.gov.uk.
