You asked

Thank for letting us know that black people are 4 times more likely to die from COVID-19.

Please clarify the fact that the death toll in the whole of the Continent of Africa has never reached the United Kingdom figure of over 40,000?

Thank you for your enquiry.

We are responsible for statistics regarding deaths registered in England and Wales. Therefore, we would be unable to provide a comparison of figures for England and Wales and the Continent of Africa, as we do not hold information regarding coronavirus (COVID-19) death rates in Africa.

We are currently working to increase our understanding of mortality involving COVID-19 in other countries, and plan to publish a comparison with European countries in the coming weeks.

Information on global COVID-19 death rates can be obtained from the World Health Organisation and a number of academic institutions, such as Johns Hopkins University.
