You asked

I would like to know the number of COVID-19 related deaths for people working in slaughterhouses, cutting plants and meat processing facilities broken down by industry.

If possible I would like to know the number of deaths for each facility.

Thank you for your request.

Unfortunately, we would be unable to provide you with the information you have requested regarding deaths involving COVID-19 of workers from specific meat processing facilities. This information is not recorded on the death certificate and is, therefore, we do not hold this information.

However, the following datasets may be of interest to you.

Last month we published the report 'Coronavirus (COVID-19) related deaths by occupation, England and Wales: deaths registered between 9 March and 25 May 2020'. We use the Standard Occupation Classification (SOC)framework to classify occupations creating meaningful groups according to the concept of 'skill level' and 'skill specialisation'.

The below table below shows the SOC2010 major groups and their codes, these are the groupings that were used in the recent report. ONS has an Occupation Coding Tool which allows you to identify, using a keyword search, the SOC2010 code that is most appropriate for your use.

Butchers are under major group code 5 (Skilled Trades and Occupations), while those working in the mass production of meat preparation are classified in 'Process, Plant and Machine Operatives' (group 8).
