You asked

Please provide information on the number of COVID-19 deaths by week by MSOA area for the UK for 2020 to the end of May.

Please could I also receive updates on a weekly basis if possible?

Thank you for your enquiry.

We are responsible for the production of mortality statistics for England and Wales. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for publishing the number of deaths registered in Scotland and Northern Ireland. They can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

Unfortunately, we would be unable to provide you with weekly COVID-19 related deaths by MSOA. In order to fulfil this request, we would need use a high level of statistical skill and judgement in order to create a bespoke analysis/table. Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, Public Authorities are not obligated to create information in order to respond to requests. We therefore consider this to be information not held.

However, we are able to provide the following:

Please see the following link: Deaths involving COVID-19 by local area and socioeconomic deprivation: deaths occurring between 1 March and 31 May 2020. In this publication, figures for COVID-19 related deaths by MSOA (for England and Wales) can be found using the interactive search function under heading 6. Data at this geography takes a little longer to accurately collate and analyse, so we are unable to produce this on a weekly basis.

Please also see the following publication: Death registrations and occurrences by local authority and health board. You can filter on 'Area code' to find a weekly breakdown of deaths in English or Welsh local authorities. This bulletin is updated every Tuesday at approximately 09:30am.

If you would like to discuss these statistics further, please contact health.data@ons.gov.uk.
