Thank you for your enquiry.

We are responsible for the production of mortality statistics for England and Wales. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for publishing mortality statistics in Scotland and Northern Ireland. They can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

Unfortunately, we would be unable to provide you with deaths specifically from A and E departments. We collect data from the death certificate. The place of occurrence is listed as 'hospital'. Therefore, we do not hold the specific data you have requested. NHS Digital may be better placed to answer your request. They can be contacted via email at enquiries@nhsdigital.nhs.uk.

However, we have two main publications that present data by place of death, which you can download from our website via the links below:

Deaths Registered in England and Wales: please see Table 10, which shows deaths by cause and place of occurrence. This data is available from 2006 to 2019.

This data is available from 2006 to 2019.

Rolling annual death registrations by place of occurrence, England, period ending Quarter 2 (July to Sept) of financial year 2019 to 2020. This shows data by location and place of death, which includes home, hospital, hospice, care home, and OCE or elsewhere.

You can also find a variety of ad hoc tables that include place of death, specific to location or underlying cause, in the user requested data section of ONS website, which you may find useful.
