Could you confirm that the following information supplied on the website is correct:

Total England and Wales deaths for April 2019 is approx 43,000.

Total England and Wales deaths for Apr 2020 is 88,049.

This equates to an extra 45,000 deaths.

Total deaths from COVID-19 up to the 30th April was 26,711.

This leaves a completely unexplained 18,289 extra deaths in April.

I also request, if you state these figures are correct, to view all 88,049 death certificates for April.

We would be unable to allow you to view all 88,049 death certificates for deaths registered in April 2020, as death certificates contain identifiable personal information. Section 39 of the Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007 (SRSA) renders it a criminal offence to release personal information held by the Board for statistical purposes that would identify an individual or a body corporate. This includes individuals that are deceased. As the disclosure of this information is prohibited by another enactment, the requested information is considered exempt by Section 44 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA).
